CCBC breaks ground for Carol D. Eustis Center for Health Professions at CCBC Essex
(Baltimore County, Md. - June 5, 2018) – Community College of Baltimore County will host a groundbreaking ceremony at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, June 13, at CCBC Essex to celebrate the start of construction for its new Health Careers and Technology Building. The $65 million project will be named in honor of the late Carol D. Eustis, who served for 12 years as dean of CCBC's School of Health Professions and enjoyed a stellar 46-year career at CCBC Essex.
The groundbreaking ceremony will be held at 7201 Rossville Boulevard, along the pathway at CCBC Essex, between the James A. Newpher Library and the Health Careers and Technology Building.
Free parking is available in Lots 6 and 7.
"I am honored to have worked alongside Carol Eustis, and I am proud to be able to preserve her legacy of excellence in health care and nursing education," said CCBC President Sandra Kurtinitis. "Carol was an amazing educator and a visionary fundraiser, which is why this is such a fitting tribute to her nearly half century of dedication to CCBC and its students. Additionally, this groundbreaking celebration would not be possible without the generous support of the state of Maryland and Baltimore County for allocating funds as part of the capital budget."
The new four-story, 120,000 square foot Carol D. Eustis Center for Health Professions building will provide labs, classrooms, and offices for CCBC Health Professions departments and an expanded 140-seat testing center with sections for adaptability, including eight reduced-distraction testing rooms for special needs students. CCBC Essex Health Professions housed in the building include Nursing, Respiratory Therapy, Radiology, Radiography, Emergency Medical Technology, Physician Assistant, Massage Therapy, and Medical Laboratory Testing. The project is slated for completion and occupancy for the fall 2020 semester.
Highlights of the new building include simulation labs with computer-controlled mannequins that can mimic patient conditions; a home environment simulation lab for "real world" emergency response practice; debriefing rooms for students to view colleagues in simulation labs or their own performance; an Academic Conference Center with adaptable layouts for team-based learning with instructor-led broadcast capabilities; small spaces for students for individual, group study or supplemental instruction; simulated exam and hospital patient rooms; and a cross-discipline simulation lab which can mimic emergency room station conditions.
Eustis began her career at CCBC in 1969 as an assistant professor of Health and Physical Education at the former Essex Community College, where she was later promoted to department chair and then division chair. In 1999, Eustis was elevated to academic dean of Allied Health and Human Performance, and in 2003 she became the dean of Instruction of the School of Health Professions.
Eustis' insight led her to staff CCBC's School of Health Professions with grant professionals who helped secure funding for high quality health care education. She garnered the college's first $1 million grant from MedStar, which supplemented salaries to attract top health care faculty. Eustis was also a trailblazer in community college women's athletics at the local, state, regional and national level, earning Coach of the Year 14 times for field hockey and basketball. She also was inducted into the National Junior College Athletics Association (NJCAA) Region XX Hall of Fame. Eustis was inducted posthumously as a CCBC Emeritus Professor upon her death in 2015.
