BACKGROUND:
The Community College of Baltimore County (CCBC) Athletics Hall of Fame will induct 1974 CCBC Essex Men's Soccer team at a ceremony during a soccer doubleheader at 2 p.m. on Saturday, September 21 at CCBC Essex in Baltimore, Md. The CCBC Athletics Hall of Fame honors former student-athletes and former and current coaches; teams; and athletic administrators/staff for outstanding contributions to athletics on the three main campuses of the Community College of Baltimore County.
The 2019 inductee in the CCBC Athletics Hall of Fame:
The 1974 CCBC Essex Men's Soccer team captured the NJCAA national championship, the first national athletic title for CCBC for any team in any sport. A top ranked team for nearly the entire season, 22 talented student-athletes from diverse backgrounds came together 45 years ago to defeat Suffolk County Community College (Selden, N.Y) for the national tile. During a weekend in late November, 1974 at the CCBC Essex Stadium, the team won three tournament game culminating with a 2-0 championship game victory. The team finished with a 14-1-1 record with team members garnering four NJCAA All-American and 12 combined All-NJCAA Region XX and All-Maryland JUCO Conference awards. The program was led by late coaches, Ed Wren and Wayne H. Rodgers, and athletic director, Dr. Andrew F. McDonald.
The CCBC Athletics Hall of Fame Committee, under the leadership of Chairman George Henderson, selected this team to join the CCBC Athletics Hall of Fame this past fall. Now, in its ninth year, the CCBC Athletics Hall of Fame will have a total number of 204 honorees.
The nine-member selection committee included:
- Alumni: Gregory Hart – CCBC Catonsville (Men's Lacrosse), Kent Boles – CCBC Dundalk (Baseball, Basketball, and Tennis) and Cleveland Rudisill – CCBC Essex (Men's Basketball);
- Former coaches /athletics administrators: Jack Manley – CCBC Catonsville (long time and founding Director of Athletics), Elliott Oppenheim – CCBC Dundalk (long time Baseball coach) and George Henderson – CCBC Essex (long time Baseball coach);
- At large members: Ann Marie Thornton (CCBC Director of Development and Alumni Relations), Barb Miller (CCBC Essex alumna/ former CCBC Essex coach for Women's Volleyball and Basketball), and CCBC Director of College Athletics Brian Farrell, a former CCBC Catonsville Baseball student athlete.
