BALTIMORE COUNTY, MD (August 16, 2019) – Community College of Baltimore County Essex Athletics Friday announced that it has named Sean O'Connor head baseball coach, replacing Mike Carter who resigned in July to return to his alma mater Allegany College of Maryland.

O'Connor is just the fourth head baseball coach at CCBC Essex since 1984.

From 2009-2019, O'Connor was the head varsity coach at DeMatha Catholic High School (Hyattsville, Md.). During this time, he led his alma mater to over 200 wins, including two Washington Catholic Athletic Conference Championships (2008 and 2013) and six finals appearances (2010, 2011, 2015, 2017, 2018 and 2019), and three Maryland Private School Championships (2010, 2011 and 2017).

"I am very excited to be leading the program at CCBC Essex and to be working with the student athletes," O'Connor said. "This team will perform on the field and in the classroom, and I'm confident my staff and I will help these young men achieve all of their baseball and academic goals.

"I would like to thank the CCBC administration for this opportunity, and know they will be proud of all that we will accomplish as a program."

O'Connor has garnered five Coach of the Year awards from the American Baseball Coaches Association (Region II Coach of the Year, 2013 and 2019), Maryland State Coaches Association (2008 and 2013), and WCAC (2009). Prior to taking over the varsity team, O'Connor spent nine seasons (1999-2008) coaching the Stags' freshman team and as an assistant varsity coach.

O'Connor, 43, has been the owner of CrabFest Baseball since 2011 and head coach since 2016, guiding the team to a fifth place finish at the 2017 and 2019 All-American Amateur Baseball Association (AAABA) National Championship, and second place in the National Amateur Baseball Federation (NABF) Senior Division National Championship in 2016. In his five seasons at the helm for American Legion Greenbelt Post 136 (2012-2016), his teams won the 2012 NABF Regional Championship and were the 2013 Frank Riley League Champions. As the head coach of Canes Baseball (2013-2016), O'Connor led his teams to three championships, one runner-up finish, and a finals appearance.

"Throughout our search for our next head baseball coach, it was quickly apparent that Sean O'Connor had a successful coaching background and had established himself in the region and Maryland communities to allow him to successfully recruit student athletes to CCBC Essex," said Greg Witkop, CCBC Essex Athletic Administrator. "He is an experienced high school coach from a high-profile league, and combined with his summer coaching success has shown the ability to help student athletes transition to the next level both academically and athletically."

He attended and played baseball at DeMatha (1990-1994) before playing collegiately at Western Maryland College (now McDaniel College) until 1996 when injury cut short his career. He holds his Bachelor of Arts degree in Business Administration from Western Maryland.

O'Connor has owned and operated All in Broadcasting, a video and audio streaming company, since 2001, and is the state director for National Identification Team Selection (USA Baseball) where he plans and implements player identification programs for the state of Maryland. He currently resides in Silver Spring, Md.
