Men's Soccer: Knights Top Cougars 2-1 for Second Win of Season

ROSEDALE, Md. -- The Knights won its second consecutive game last night with a 2-1 victory over Frederick Community College at CCBC Essex Stadium.

The game began as a defensive battle between two talented Maryland Juco Athletic Conference teams.

Sophomore Kia Livani (Solna) got the Knights (2-2) on the board in the 24th minute of play with a half-bicycle kick, converting a corner kick played in by sophomore Yassine Iguidre (Dundalk).

The Cougars (2-2) answered at 66:35 when sophomore Christian Deynes scored on a set piece from freshman Guillermo Marenco.

The late goal sparked the Knights, resulting in a dominating possession and a new-found willingness to win.

With less than ten minutes remaining in a tied game, the Cougars committed a foul deep into their own half.

In the 81st minute, sophomore Steve Momenya (Parkdale) scored off a free kick by Javier Avetrani (Oakland Mills) to put the Knights back on top 2-1.

The game-winning goal for Momenya was his third career tally.

Throughout the opening minutes of the game, the Knights held a slight possession advantage over the Cougars.

While Essex had a fair amount of possessions in the midfield, they struggled early to get any crosses from the sideline to the 18-yard box.

Knights Take Down Riverhawks for First Win

On Saturday, Sept. 3, the Knights picked up its first win of the season with a convincing 5-0 shutout victory against Anne Arundel Community College.

Sophomore goalie Trevor Brookhart made six saves in his 84 minutes of play.

"It felt good to get our first win," Brookhart said. "Steve [Momenya] is the only returner playing on defense, but as a whole, we're starting to get better each game."

Freshmen Nehemiah Crawford (Baltimore City College) and Thaliek Willis (Joppatowne) had two goals each and sophomore  Ibrahim Kouyate (Takoma Park) scored his first of the season.

Crawford scored his first goal at 6:10 off a header when Avetrani sent a beautiful crossing pass into the box.

Less than seven minutes later, Crawford struck again, this time with an assist from Alexander Munley (Bel Air).

Kouyate scored his goal unassisted in the 27th minute of play to give the Knights a 3-0 halftime lead.

At 78:16, Willis scored unassisted after collecting the rebound of his first shot and firing into a near-open net.

He added his second goal with 20 seconds remaining in the contest.

Next up for the Knights

CCBC Essex will travel to North Carolina this weekend to take on the defending national champion and No. 5 ranked Louisburg College on Saturday and Patrick Henry Community College on Sunday.
