No. 3 Knights Advance to Quarterfinals

Rosedale Md.— The CCBC Essex Knights women's basketball team continues to dominate by beating Oakland Community College in the NJCAA Division II Women's Basketball Championship sweet sixteen, 91-49. Knights scoring in the game was led by Jaelyn Swann with 24 points. Patricia Anumgba followed her, scoring 19 points for the Knights, and Vanessa Woodfolk with 11 points in the game.

Anumgba started out the first quarter on fire, scoring 15 of the 22 points made by the Knights in the first ten minutes of the game. She was flawless making 100% of her three pointers and free throws in the first quarter.

In the second quarter of the game, sisters Jaelyn and Lyric Swann, scored five points each, accounting for ten of the 19 points made by the Knights in the second quarter. The Essex Knights were able to hold the Oakland Raiders scoreless for over the first seven minutes of the quarter, allowing only scoring six points to be scored by the Raisers in the second quarter, giving the Knights the lead at the half, 41-21.

The third quarter was the highest scoring quarter for the Knights with 29 points made, and only allowing Oakland to score another 15 points, tying the same amount they scored in the first quarter. Kendal Haggerty and Kelly Foster were able to add to the Knights score, making eight and five points, respectively.

Into the fourth quarter Jaelyn Swann stayed hot, scoring ten of the 21 points scored for the Knights. Two other players helping her clean up the Oakland Raiders were Cassandra Hawthorne with four points scored and Promise Cunningham with seven points in the fourth quarter.

Every player on the Knights basketball team was able to make multiple rebounds throughout the game for a total of 47 rebounds, 18 offensive and 29 defensive. Leading the Knights was Lyric Swann and Woodfolk, both with eight rebounds each. Haggerty and Lillian Harris were behind them with six rebounds each.

The Knights were able to block the ball seven times and steal the ball 14 times from Oakland. CCBC Essex also dominated Oakland in multiple other categories, helping the team take the win. Essex field goal percentage was 43.2% compared to Oakland with 31% in field goals made. The three-point percentage 43.3% for Essex and only 18.8% for Oakland.

In addition to leading the team in scoring and threes made on the day, Jaelyn Swann also recorded her 100th three-pointer of the season.

The Knights continue dancing on Wednesday, March 16th at 6:00pm. The game is against 6-seeded Mesa Community College, in the quarterfinals of the NJCAA DII National Tournament.
