Volleyball: Knights Continue Winning, Best Lakers 3-0

By Oluwaseun Adeniji

BALTIMORE COUNTY, MD – The Knights have won three in a row and five of its last six after sweeping Garrett College on Thursday, outscoring them 75-30, before a home crowd at the CCBC Essex Wellness & Athletics Center.

The Knights have defeated the Lakers in three of the teams' last four meetings. With the win, Essex is now 6-6 overall and 4-2 in the Maryland JUCO Athletic Conference.

Although the Lakers scored first, the Knights took control on many serves, using a run of 7-0 in the first set en route to a 25-11 win.

Freshman Ann Benzinger (Dulaney) led the Knights with eight service aces in the match, followed by freshman Whitney Chappell (Baltimore Polytechnic) with four. Freshman Sabrina Bradford (Hereford) chipped in with one service ace.

CCBC Essex's dominance continued in the second set.

The Knights used a run of 10-0 to take the second frame 25-13.

It became apparent that the home court was working to the Knights' advantage, as they began the third on a 9-0 run that would reach 11-1 before a Lakers' timeout.

The break in play only delayed the inevitable and the Knights took the third set 25-6 for the sweep.

"We played solid," said head coach Geoffrey Koger. "There are still things we need to work on as a team, but [tonight] when we got stuck in the game against Garrett our serves got us out of it."

The Knights are back on the court Monday at Hagerstown Community College. Game time is scheduled for 6 p.m.
