CCBC Essex Knights Mourn the Passing of Former Baseball Student-Athlete Jonah Baney

Baltimore, Md.— It is with deep sorrow that the CCBC Essex Knights share the passing of former student-athlete, Jonah Baney. We are saddened to announce his passing from a car accident on June 14, 2022. Our sincere condolences go out to his family, friends, teammates and coaches.

Knights Baseball Head Coach Sean O'Connor reacted to the news saying, "we were shocked to hear it. Jonah was a great student-athlete and a pleasure to coach. He worked incredibly hard on the field and in the classroom. He was loved by his teammates and was a big part of the 2021 season."

Jonah was recruited to play for the Knights baseball team as a catcher when he graduated high school in 2020 from Landsdowne High School. Prior to the spring 2021 season, he switched battery roles, moving from catcher to pitcher.

"Jonah was one of the guys that helped us establish the foundation of our program," said Knights pitching coach, Tim O'Brien. "He transitioned from catcher to pitcher and was always trying to find the best way to help the team. He shared experiences that improved fellow pitchers and was a respected voice in the dugout. His continued interest was evident as he continued to attend games and support his teammates this past season. Jonah was the consummate teammate!"

Greg Witkop, Assistant Director of College Athletics for CCBC Essex, shared his thoughts on the loss, "Jonah was a great young man in the classroom and on the baseball field. He had a bright future ahead of him and he will be greatly missed by his family, friends, and the Knights community."

Jonah was set to earn his degree from CCBC at the end of the summer, and move on to Salisbury University in the fall. He wanted to pursue a career in law enforcement.

The viewings for Jonah will be at Ambrose Funeral Home in Arbutus on Thursday, June 23 and Friday, June 24 from 3-5 pm and 7-9 pm.
