Ryan Deveaux Named New Head Coach of CCBC Essex Women’s Basketball Following the Departure of Mike Seney
Rossville, MD — A new era begins for the CCBC Essex women's basketball program as longtime assistant coach Ryan Deveaux has been named head coach, following the departure of nationally acclaimed coach Mike Seney.
Seney, who guided the Knights to the national scene since taking over the program in 2019, officially stepped down this week. Under his leadership, the team captured multiple Region 20 championships, made the NJCAA Division II Tournament final four each year, and claimed the program's first national title in 2023.
In his place steps a familiar face: Ryan Deveaux, a respected basketball mind whose coaching journey has mirrored the growth of the program itself. Deveaux has been deeply entrenched in the local basketball scene for over a decade, and his appointment signals continuity in this new chapter for the Knights.
Deveaux began his basketball career as a player at Harford Community College from 2005 to 2007, where he averaged 11 points per game. He went on to earn his bachelor's degree in Business Management and Marketing from Bowie State University.
Deveaux entered the coaching ranks with boys' AAU programs, including the Harford County Dream Team and Harford United, where he coached from 2010 to 2016, developing young talent. He continued that success at Joppatowne High School, serving as the boys' junior varsity head coach from 2016 to 2018. There, he compiled an impressive 35-5 record while also contributing as an assistant coach on the varsity squad.
His transition to women's basketball came during the 2018-2019 season, when he joined Coach Seney's staff at Harford Community College. That team posted a dominant 30-2 record, winning the Region and District titles enroute to an appearance in the NJCAA Division I National Tournament.
When the women's basketball program was relaunched at CCBC Essex in 2019, Deveaux was among the original coaches brought in to help build it from the ground up. He returned to the program in 2023 as an assistant, the year the Knights claimed consecutive Region 20 championships and finished 4th and 3rd nationally in 2024 and 2025, respectively.
"Ryan has been a part of this program and played an integral role since we started the process of bringing basketball back to Essex," said CCBC Essex's athletic director, Greg Witkop. "It was very important for us to have a head coach who has committed their time to building this program to compete at the national level and we are excited to move forward with him running the show."
Deveaux now takes the reins of one of the premier junior college programs in the country. With a championship pedigree, strong recruiting ties, and a passion for developing student-athletes, he's poised to sustain—and elevate—the legacy built under Seney.
"When we started this program in 2019, we had lofty goals for coach Seney," said Witkop. "We achieved every one of those goals while also providing a platform for students to advance themselves to four-year programs. I want to thank Mike Seney for his dedication to making our women's basketball program so successful."
As the 2025-26 season approaches, the Knights enter a new chapter—one led by a coach who's helped shape their rise from the beginning. With Deveaux at the helm, the future remains bright for CCBC Essex women's basketball.
"I'm very grateful and excited for the opportunity to continue to lead this program," said Deveaux. "Under the leadership of our athletic director, Greg Witkop, and coach, Mike Seney, we've been able to build a national powerhouse and have been able to assist our student-athletes with reaching their goals of playing at the NCAA level. The coaching staff and I are fully committed to maintaining our culture and our commitment to the student-athletes success."
