Rosedale, MD — Freshman Gabriel Vargas (Cidra, PR / Centennial HS) collected three hits in three at-bats, but CCBC Essex lost to Harford Fighting Owls 16-10 on Tuesday at CCBC Essex. Vargas singled in the second inning, singled in the seventh inning, and singled in the fourth inning.
Despite the loss, CCBC Essex did collect nine hits in the high-scoring affair. Unfortunately, Harford Fighting Owls had 15 hits on the way to victory.
Harford Fighting Owls got on the board in the first inning after Frank Adamski singled, scoring one run.
CCBC Essex took the lead in the bottom of the first inning after Matthew Rubin balked, and Freshman Lorenzo Rodriguez-Pozo (Orlando, FL / Lake Nona HS) grounded out, each scoring one run.
Harford Fighting Owls captured the lead, 4-2, in the top of the second after Adamski walked, Rueben Livingston singled down the left field line, and Jack Fitzpatrick walked, each scoring one run.
Harford Fighting Owls added one run in the third. Ryan Albin singled down the left field line, making the score 5-3.
CCBC Essex scored six runs on four hits in the bottom of the sixth inning. Freshman Evan McCray (Waldorf, MD / North Point HS) singled, scoring one run, Vargas drew a walk, scoring one run, Freshman Maison Becker (Suffolk, VA / Nansemond River HS) was struck by a pitch, driving in a run, Sophomore Maxwell Urena (Brooklyn, NY / Christ the King HS) singled, scoring one run, an error scored one run, and Freshman Jack Chase (Clifton, VA / Centreville HS) hit into a double play, but one run scored.
Harford Fighting Owls flipped the game on its head in the top of the seventh, scoring seven runs on six hits to take the lead, 16-9. The biggest blow in the inning was a single by Michael Lavanga on the seventh pitch of the at-bat that drove in two.
Freshman Logan Castro (Brantford, ON, Canada / Brantford Collegiate Institute) stepped on the bump first for CCBC Essex. The hurler gave up five hits and five runs (two earned) over two innings, striking out none and walking two. Rubin stepped on the mound first for Harford Fighting Owls. The starting pitcher gave up two hits and three runs over three innings, striking out three and walking one.
CCBC Essex piled up nine hits in the game.
Harford Fighting Owls collected 15 hits in the game. Adamski drove the middle of the lineup, leading Harford Fighting Owls with four runs batted in. The second baseman went 2-for-5 on the day. Number seven hitter, Rubin, showed the depth of Harford Fighting Owls's lineup, by leading them with three hits in three at-bats. Livingston, Jeremy Reyes, Lavanga, Albin, and Keanu Cowley each collected multiple hits for Harford Fighting Owls. Harford Fighting Owls had a strong eye at the plate, accumulating nine walks for the game. Livingston and Fitzpatrick led the team with two bases on balls each.
Next up, the Knights hit the road on Thursday as they travel to Germantown, MD to face the defending Region 20 Champion, Montgomery College. First pitch is scheduled for noon at Montgomery College.
