Eduardo Zayas Has Lots Of Hits But CCBC Essex Falls To Chesapeake College

Rosedale, MD – Sophomore Eduardo Zayas (Cidra, PR / Bilingual Education School at Cidra) continued to shine at the plate, collecting three hits in four at-bats, but CCBC Essex fell to East Division-leading Chesapeake College, 7-3, in Game 1 of Thursday's Region 20 doubleheader.

Zayas opened the scoring in the bottom of the first with an RBI double to the gap, giving the Knights a brief 1-0 lead.

Chesapeake College responded in the top of the second when Wallace doubled down the left field line to tie the game at 1-1. The Seagulls then took control in the top of the fourth, erupting for five runs on six hits. The key moment came on a two-RBI single by TOlle to give Chesapeake a 6-1 lead they would not relinquish.

Sophomore Drew Rommel (Fallston, MD / Fallston) started on the mound for CCBC Essex and battled through five innings, allowing 11 hits and six runs (five earned), with one strikeout and one walk. Chesapeake's Ethan Lodish picked up the win after tossing five strong innings, giving up six hits and two runs while striking out two.

Sophomore Justin Cook (Bradenton, FL / Manatee) also had a multi-hit game for the Knights, going 2-for-4. Zayas added two stolen bases to his impressive day, and CCBC Essex swiped four bags as a team. Defensively, the Knights were sharp, turning a double play and committing no errors. Sophomore Maxwell Urena (Brooklyn, NY / Christ the King) led the way with five assists in the field.

Chesapeake College finished with 15 hits in the game, led by TOlle, who went 3-for-4 with two RBIs. Hubred also had three hits, while Wallace, Smithhart, and Elliot each contributed multiple knocks to a balanced offensive attack.

Chesapeake now leads the season series 2-1 with one game remaining and currently sits atop the Region 20 East Division standings.

Game 2 of the doubleheader begins in 30 minutes as the Knights look to even the series and bounce back.
