Covey Resigns, Stewart Takes the Reins of Knights Men's Lacrosse Program

After five years with the Knights men's lacrosse program, Tyler Covey is stepping down to pursue a new endeavor in his coaching career. Coach Covey started with the Knights under Shawn Burke, serving as the offensive coordinator. In 2023, Covey took over for Burke as the head coach, leading the Knights to their first regional championship since 2016 in just his second season at the helm. He has moved on to be an assistant coach at NCAA DIII Centre College in Danville, Kentucky.

Athletic Director, Greg Witkop spoke highly of Covey and his tenure with CCBC Essex. "Coach Covey provided us with two years of strong leadership and stability within our program. This is evidence by winning the 2024 NJCAA region championship and advancing to the NJCAA national championship game. We are excited to see him receive a much deserved opportunity at the NCAA level and wish him the best."

As the start of the fall season approached, many from the lacrosse community and Essex alumni network put forth recommendations. After serious consideration of numerous candidates, Witkop named Brian Stewart as the next head coach of the CCBC Essex Knights men's lacrosse program.

Stewart served as a naval officer, and head coach for the Naval Academy Preparatory School for five years (2006-2011) before accepting an assistant coaching position at NCAA DII Limestone College. After two seasons, he accepted the head coaching position at NCAA DIII University of Mount Union, where he held the title for nine years (2013-2022).

Prior to accepting this position with the Knights, Stewart was the head coach of Northeast High School for two years, with an additional three years as the head coach of North County High School before his time with the naval academy.

Witkop stated, "Brian Stewart's track record stood out amongst a group of talented coaches, who expressed interest in our coaching position. With 16 years of coaching experience at the post-secondary level, including 14 years as a head coach, he has demonstrated experience as a recruiter, and as a leader of young men, making him the ideal candidate to lead the lacrosse program."

Stewart's drive to develop young adults and his love of teaching goes beyond the lacrosse field. He earned his Masters of Education from the University of Mount Union in 2022. He currently teaches health at Northeast High School.

Speaking on this opportunity, Stewart said, "I'd like to thank Greg Witkop, the search committee and Alumni for the opportunity to serve the CCBC Essex Men's Lacrosse program. The passion and enthusiasm throughout the process was extremely apparent. It's a great time to be a Knight! I look forward to building and growing relationships with the current team and families, recruits, and alumni."
