Moye Named Conference Women's Basketball Player of the Year

By Cole Blackwell

Baltimore County, Md. -- Knights sophomore guard Mya Moye has been named Maryland Juco Athletic Conference Women's Basketball Player of the Year, as released by the conference on Tuesday.

The Florida A&M University transfer and Anacostia High School stand out, proved to be one of the pivotal factors in the Knights' historic season.

Moye helped lead her team to a 30-2 record (12-0 in conference), an NJCAA Division II Region XX championship, and a berth in the NJCAA Division II Women's Basketball Championship.

"Mya Moye the basketball player was amazing," said head women's basketball coach Mike Seney. "But it came second to Mya Moye the young woman. Her growth on and off the court this year was the reason she was successful. I've coached a lot of superstars and she's right up there as one of the best student-athletes to come out of the Maryland Juco Conference."

How she did it

Moye led the conference in scoring (22.8 points per game), free throw percentage (79.0%) and found herself at number three in both assists per game (6.7) and three-point percentage (38.8%) this season. Her performances on the court led her to earning Maryland Juco Women's Basketball Athlete of the Month an astounding four straight months and was twice named NJCAA Women's Basketball Division II Player of the Week.

81-point game

On January 29, CCBC Essex hit the road to take on Region XX foe Northern Virginia Community College.

Mourning the loss of her basketball idol, Kobe Bryant, Moye scored 81 points on 32-of-56 shooting, setting the NJCAA single-game women's basketball scoring record and record for most field goals in a game (32), dating back to 1975 and across all divisions.

Moye's accomplishment also earned her a spot on ESPN's Sportscenter Instagram page and to date has over 500,000 likes.

CCBC Essex vs. Lackawanna

The Knights finished the season 3-0 against 2019 national semifinalists. The last of those wins came at home on February 19 against Lackawanna College.

Lackawanna came in ranked No. 21 nationally, with the Knights sitting at No. 12. The game was arguably the most crucial at this point in the Knights' season, as it gave the team a chance to silence those whom had doubts in they success.

Essex defeated Lackawanna 85-71 on the back of Moye's 29-point performance. She shot 9-of-16 overall (3-of-5 from behind the arc), had four rebounds, five assists, three steals and hit 8-of-10 from the charity stripe.

Howard Community College

On November 26, the team's first conference game of the year, Seney was looking to extend his unbeaten run in conference play to 86 consecutive games.

Moye did not let him down, as she scored a career-high (at the time) 33 points. She shot 7-of-8 from three and made 12-of-16 field goals that night.

This performance helped solidified Moye's first conference Athlete of the Month award and would be the beginning of a historic season.

She also had nine assists, five rebounds, and two steals.

"Mya [Moye] has been finding her groove over the last few games,"  Seney said at the time.

Region XX Championship

The Region XX Division II Tournament championship game on March 8 was a thriller for anyone who watched. The Knights took on Chesapeake for the title and once again Moye showed her dominance.

She finished with 29 points and 11 assists in the championship game.

Moye averaged 22.1 points per game, nine assists and shot 35% (21-60) during the three-day tournament and was named tournament MVP.
