Women's Basketball: No. 19 Knights 2-0 at Carly Rae Classic to Remain Undefeated
Wilmington, N.C. - No. 19 ranked CCBC Essex went 2-0 last weekend at the Carly Rae Classic, defeating Brunswick Community College 85-56 on Friday night and host Cape Fear Community College 84-55 on Saturday afternoon.
Lyric Swann (Elkridge, Md.) paced the Knights offense in both games, finishing the weekend with 50 points on 19-47 shooting (40.4%), 14 assists, 13 rebounds and nine steals. She also hit 7-19 three-point attempts and was 5-6 from the free throw line.
Patricia Anumgba (Silver Spring, Md.), Vanessa Woodfolk (Charlottesville, Va.) and Anasia Staton (Jersey City, N.J.) led a Knights defense that forced 60 turnovers in two games.
Knights fast out of gate vs. Dolphins
The Knights started fast on Friday against Brunswick, coming out on a 13-1 run and kept their foot on the accelerator to take a 36-19 lead into halftime.
"Brunswick played a nice 3-2 zone to protect the paint from our drivers," said Knights head coach Mike Seney. "[It] really forced us to shoot even more from long distance than we normally do."
Although the Knights shot just 25% from behind the arc (12-52), Swann and Anumgba provided sparks on transition.
Swann had a game-high 22 points and her nine assists were also the most by any player on the court.
Anumgba finished second with 15 points, led the game with seven steals, and had eight rebounds.
Kendal Haggerty (Frederick, Md.) and Jaelyn Swann (Elkridge, Md.) started found their rhythm in the second half and finished the game combining for nine three pointers.
Haggerty and Swann each finished with 15 points and had nine and four rebounds, respectively.
Woodfolk was a force on the boards with a game-high 13 rebounds, nine of which came on the defensive side. Not far behind was Staton who ended with 12 rebounds, eight defensively.
Knights topple host Sea Devils
On Saturday, things started a little differently for the Knights.
Trailing 9-2 to early, Essex clawed back to take a 15-13 lead heading into the 2nd quarter.
The second proved to be a back and forth affair with both teams hitting each other with haymakers and the Knights taking a 32-29 lead into the break.
"The third quarter is usually our money quarter," Seney said. And he was right.
CCBC Essex came out on a 10-0 run to start the third and outscored the Sea Devils 31-7 in the frame.
Woodfolk was a force inside and out on both ends of the court.
She finished with 18 points, 10 of which came in the third on 3-5 shooting, 2-3 on three-point attempts. On defense, Woodfolk recorded three of her team-high nine rebounds.
Lyric Swann led the Knights for a third straight game in scoring, this time ending with a season-high 28 points (11-24, 4-10 three pointers), and added five assists and six rebounds.
Anumgba had 17 points on 6-14 (38.4%) shooting. She also had three steals, as did Haggerty and Swann.
In her first action of the season, Kelly Foster had nine points, a game-high four steals, and seven rebounds in just nine minutes on the court.
