CCBC Essex names Stephen King Head Women’s Soccer Coach

BALTIMORE COUNTY, MD (June 22, 2021) – Community College of Baltimore County Essex Athletics today announced that it has named Stephen King head women's soccer coach, replacing Joe Fiedler who resigned after three seasons earlier this month. Fiedler will remain, and enter his tenth season, as head men's soccer coach.

"Stephen King brings a tremendous amount of local soccer connections and recruiting experience from his time as the assistant women's soccer coach at Johns Hopkins University," said CCBC Essex Athletic Administrator, Greg Witkop. "We are excited to add Coach King to our strong coaching staff here at CCBC Essex."

King joined the CCBC Essex women's soccer coaching staff in January as Recruiting Coordinator, after spending the previous 10 seasons at Johns Hopkins University where he was the women's soccer assistant coach (August 2010-March 2020).

"I want to thank [Knights] Athletic Administrator Greg Witkop and Coach Fiedler for giving me the opportunity to take over the program," King said. "I'm excited to build on the success of the last couple of seasons, and to compete for and win a national championship."

"Seeing the support from the school administration towards its Athletic department and programs, I know I made a great decision and am in the right place to continue my coaching career; and, I can't wait to get started," said King.

While at Hopkins, King was an essential part of a program that won six Centennial Conference championships, while also advancing to the NCAA Division III Tournament Elite Eight five times and a Final Four (2014). During his tenure with the Blue Jays, King helped produce six Conference Player of the Year recipients and 11 First Team All-Americans. In addition, JHU was awarded Centennial Conference Coaching Staff of the Year honors four times.

Prior to Johns Hopkins, King spent a season as an assistant coach at his alma mater, University of Maryland Baltimore County in 2009. As a member of former Knights head men's soccer coach Pete Caringi's squad at UMBC, King was a four-year starter (2005-2008) making 66 consecutive appearances. King set the America East record for conference shutouts in a season (2005), finished in the Top 25 NCAA Division I for save percentage and goals against average (2005, 2007), and set the program Division I record for saves in a game (12) and consecutive minutes played (3,300). He would end his career with the Retrievers, finishing third in school history in career shutouts, fourth in career saves, and fifth in career victories.

King played locally at Archbishop Curley High School (Baltimore, Md.), prior to attending UMBC, where he was an All-Maryland State selection in 2004. As the starting goalkeeper of the Baltimore Casa Mia Bays for eight years, King would help win six Maryland State Championships, five Region I championships, and compete in four USYSA National Tournaments, winning two National Championships, as well as being awarded the USYSA Golden Glove in 2003 and 2004.

King graduated from UMBC in 2009 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in American Studies and currently resides in Essex, Md.
