Essex, Md— Knights unable to hold off Fighting Owls at home. In what was a very hard-fought game between the CCBC Essex Knights and the Harford Community College Fighting Owls, the Knights were able to overcome an early defecit, but could not hold onto their eventual 2-1 lead in the 3-2 loss.
Despite being plagued by the injury bug this season, the Knights held their own and played yet another physical match. In what was their fourth match without standout midfielder Tyetianna Cooper, they have needed someone to step up and fill the role of an offensive threat.
Fortunately for them, midfielders Mackenzie Celenza and Avery Lane have stepped up to lead the offensive attack. Lane and Celenza, who were already contributors offensively before the injury to Cooper, have recorded 11 goals combined since the injury.
After conceding an early goal from a wacky deflection that set up a scoring opportunity for the Fighting Owls, the Knights went on to score two of their own and play a cleaner half. With 13 minutes before half time Lane would win a contested assist from Mia Vetri, fight through two Fighting Owl defenders and find the back of the net to tie things up 1-1.
Then, with less than one minute until halftime, Diamond Brown was assisted by Alexandra Henning and Sarah Briggs, and was able to loft it over the Fighting Owls keeper. Knights entered the break leading 2-1.
Just as the Knights seemed to be closing the match out, they conceded two goals in five minutes and fell behind 3-2 in the 88th minute.
It may not have been their best performance, but the lady Knights can certainly build from this loss moving forward. The Knights will travel for their next match on Thursday against the Carrol Community College Lynx's in Westminster, Md. The Lynx's are currently 3-0-1 at home, the Knights will have to bring their game.
