CCBC Essex Women’s Soccer Falls to College of Southern Maryland in Region 20 Semifinals

Essex, MD- The CCBC Essex women's soccer team wrapped up their season with a hard-fought 3-2 loss to the College of Southern Maryland (CSM) in the NJCAA Division II Region 20 semifinals. Despite leading for much of the match, the Knights were unable to hold off CSM's late comeback, ending their season with a record of 10-5-3.

The game started with an early surge from CCBC Essex. Avery Lane scored in the 19th minute, assisted by Mackenzie Celenza, putting Essex ahead 1-0. This goal set a positive tone for the first half as the Knights controlled possession and took advantage of their offensive opportunities. They tallied seven shots in the first half, putting CSM's defense on high alert.

In the second half, the Knights continued their offensive pressure. Just eight minutes into the half, Samantha Grace scored Essex's second goal, with an assist from Sarah Briggs, to increase their lead to 2-0. The Knights appeared to be in control, but CSM quickly responded, signaling a shift in momentum that would define the remainder of the game.

CSM struck back in the 61st minute with a goal from Sara Allwine, assisted by Zoi Whitsett, narrowing the deficit to 2-1. This goal energized CSM, and they pressed hard for an equalizer, forcing Essex's defense into high-stakes moments. Four minutes later, CSM's Amber Jones scored to tie the game 2-2, putting the Knights on the defensive.

The turning point came just two minutes after the equalizer, as Sara Allwine scored her second goal of the game, putting CSM ahead 3-2 in the 67th minute. Essex fought hard to regain control, recording multiple shots and pressing into CSM's half. However, CSM's defense held strong, and goalie Kylie Smith's saves proved crucial in preserving their lead.

CCBC Essex had 16 shots in total, with nine on target, achieving a shots-on-goal percentage of 56.3%. Avery Lane, with five shots on goal, led the offensive charge, while Mackenzie Celenza and Samantha Grace played important roles in creating scoring opportunities. Despite their efforts, Essex was unable to find the back of the net again, closing out a challenging but resilient season.
