No. 3 Knights Show Dominance in First Ranked Matchup of the Season

By Madden Mellner

Rosedale, Md.—The Essex Knights Men's Lacrosse team maintained their dominant form this past weekend in their second game of the season. The team traveled north to Batavia, New York to face the Genesee Cougars. Winning 21 to 5, the Knights outscored their opponents by more than 4 times in route to victory.

The Knights never trailed in this game, taking a commanding 6-0 lead after the first quarter, and adding three more in the second, to lead 9-0 at halftime. After a scoreless first half, Genesee was able to find the back of the net in the third quarter, scoring all five of their goals in this frame. That would not be enough to overcome their initial first quarter deficit, and the Knights tallied another five in the fourth.

The Knights controlled the face off game, going 19 of 29 from the circle themselves, and holding Genesee to only eight of 29. When it came to ground balls, Essex totaled 52 ground balls in this game compared to Genesee's 29.

Freshman attackman, Pat Ruffolo, led the team in goals, shooting five-for-five on the day. Freshman midfielder, Wyatt Antkiewicz, led the team in assists, tallying five. The team leader in ground balls was freshman midfielder Liam Kammar, who ended the game with 16.

Two players had an impact on the scoreline by tallying a point in each quarter, Antkiewicz and sophomore attack Joshua Schelfe. Antkieicz finished with eight points on the day while Ruffolo and Schelfe both finished with six a piece.

The Knights look to keep their winning streak going in an away game against #1 ranked and defending national champions, Nassau, on Saturday, March 12th at 12pm.
